Honourable Steven Lewis Point appointed chancellor of UBC

The Honourable Steven Lewis Point.

The University of British Columbia has named former Lieutenant Governor the Honourable Steven Lewis Point as the university’s 19 chancellor. Point is a member of the Skowkale First Nation and has ties to the Musqueam First Nation, making him the first Indigenous person to hold the position.

Point is an alumnus of UBC’s Law program and served as the director of the First Nations Legal Studies program at Allard. He has held roles at the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, the BC Treaty Commission and served on the advisory committee for implementing recommendations from BC’s Missing Women Commission of Inquiry. He has been awarded three honorary Doctor of Laws degrees for his leadership and commitment in the field of Indigenous law and education. He will assume the role on July 1, 2020.
