Yukon University has appointed Dr. Mike DeGagné as the eighth president and vice chancellor, beginning his five-year term on July 1, 2020. He succeeds Dr. Karen Barnes, who retired after two terms. Yukon University, previously Yukon College, became an official university in February 2020.

Dr. DeGagné previously served as the president and vice chancellor of Nipissing University in North Bay Ontario, where he was one of the first Indigenous presidents appointed to a Canadian public university. Prior to his role at Nipissing, he served as the Executive Director of the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, and has more than 30 years of leadership experience.

The Centre congratulates Dr. DeGagné on his new role! With his strong support of Indigenous issues, the Indigenization of academia, and background in supporting residential school Survivors, Dr. DeGagné is a perfect fit for the Yukon’s only post-secondary institution.
