Two-spirit Indigenous couple to speak in UBC Connects series

James Makokis and Anthony Johnson became the first two-spirit Indigenous couple to win The Amazing Race Canada in 2019. Their team name Ahkameyimok, is a Cree word that roughly translates to “never give up.” They have since used their victory to raise awareness for gender and sexual identity, racism and mental health issues.

As part of an upcoming UBC Connects speaker series event, in partnership with UBC’s Indigenous Research Support Initiative (IRSI), Makokis and Johnson will explore their transformation into two-spirit Indigenous educators, leaders and activists.

Their talk, “Our Existences Are Political”: Identity and History as Pathways for Transformation,” will be streamed online for free.

When: Wednesday, September 23 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
