Artists’ Call for Expressions of Interest: New Logo for the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre at UBC

November 16, 2021

As part of its ongoing commitment to honour and prioritize relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities, the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre at UBC is looking to commission an original logo by an Indigenous artist.

The new logo will reflect the Centre’s core mandate of defending the complete truth of the Indian Residential School System in Canada, as told by Survivors and intergenerational Survivors, as a means to disrupting that system’s colonial legacy.

The Centre invites eligible artists to submit Expressions of Interest no later than February 1, 2022 at midnight, Pacific Standard Time (PST).

Eligibility

Expressions of interest are invited from artists of First Nations, Métis or Inuit heritage with home territories in Canada. A preference may be given to artists affiliated with territories on which UBC’s campuses and centres are situated, specifically those of the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil Waututh, Syilx Okanagan, Semiahmoo, Katzie, Kwikwetlem, Kwantlen, Qayqayt and Tsawwassen First Nations.

What to include

Expressions of interest should include:

– A brief artist’s statement describing the proposed approach and work

– Links to the artist’s portfolio or samples of previous work

– Sketches of the proposed logo can be included, but are not required

Process

– Up to four artists will be shortlisted. Shortlisted artists will be provided with a $500 honorarium each to develop their design concepts, plus an additional $200 if requested to provide for an honorarium to a Survivor as part of their research and development process

– The final selected artist will be paid a licensing fee of $5,000 for their completed design
